Orphan Lake Hike - This Saturday

Hi Reader,

I hope you’re enjoying the beauty of fall!

This Saturday we’re heading out to the Orphan Lake Trail in Lake Superior Provincial Park. Many consider it one of the best hikes in our area. I’ve done it 8 to 10 times, often with groups, and it never disappoints.

Is this hike right for you?

I want to be upfront. Your safety and enjoyment matter most. If you’ve never hiked rugged trails, tire easily, or aren’t used to walking 8 km or more, this one may feel overwhelming. We’ll have gentler hikes coming soon, so don’t feel you’re missing out by waiting.

For those ready for a challenge, here are the details:

Orphan Lake Trail

  • Distance from Sault: 160 km north (~2 hrs by Highway 17)
  • Description: A loop through maple and birch forest, lookouts over Orphan Lake and Lake Superior, pebble beach, waterfalls, cliffs, and rich forest scenery
  • Rating: Moderate (I’d call it a 7/10 for our age group, so a bit more than moderate) *** The Pancake Bay hike from a couple of weeks ago would be 5, as a reference point for those who joined us.
  • Terrain: Roots, rocks, steep sections, muddy patches, footbridges, elevation changes
  • Length: 8 km round trip hike
  • Time: 2.5 to 4 hrs (with lunch and sightseeing stops)
  • Highlights: Scenic vistas, waterfalls, beach access, and Baldhead River

Logistics

  • Meet: 8:45 am sharp – Walmart parking lot, NW corner near light post #2
  • Carpooling: Available for those who need it
  • Drive: ~90 minutes to Agawa Bay Visitor Centre (for parking passes) + 20 minutes to trailhead
  • Hike start: Around 11:15 am
  • Lunch break: Baldhead River beach on Lake Superior (12:30–12:45 pm)
  • Return: Back on trail by 1:15 pm, back in the Sault by ~4:30 pm

What to bring

  • Sturdy footwear with good tread
  • Lunch, snacks, and plenty of water
  • Weather-appropriate layers (it can be cooler by the lake)
  • Read the hike prep guide for more details on our webpage. www.boundlessaging.com/connect
  • Bring your signed waiver if you haven't done so already

Please let me know if you plan to attend.

If you have any questions, feel free to reply or call me at 971-2632.

Looking forward to another great day on the trail,

Lou
